Is it safe to travel to Mexico?
Yes, Mexico is a wonderful and generally safe destination for tourists! However, like any travel experience, just use common sense: avoid displaying expensive items, keep your belongings close, and stay aware of your surroundings - especially at night. For getting around, we recommend using Uber or Didi.
Any tips for first-time visitors?
Here are a few tips we absolutely recommend:
Always drink bottled water and avoid tap water.
Street food is a must—especially street tacos and esquites (corn). If you're sensitive to spices or rich foods, it’s a good idea to carry some stomach medicine like antacids or anti-acid tablets (such as Tums or Pepto-Bismol) just in case. Also, make sure to try the delicious fruit from the vendors—add a little bit of limón & tajín for the full experience!
How should I handle payments while in Mexico?
It's a good idea to carry both cash (Mexican Pesos) and a credit card. Smaller shops, markets, and street vendors typically prefer cash, while most restaurants and larger stores widely accept credit cards. Having both options ensures you're covered no matter where you go.
What's the best way to get cellphone and roaming data services in Mexico?
We recommend you get an eSIM from Maya mobile as it is affordable, convenient, and easy to use.
Do you have any recommendations of where to stay?
Please refer to our "Travel & Accommodation" tab to see our recommendations. For your convenience we have blocked some rooms with preferred rates at Intercontinental Polanco and Umbral Hotel in Centro Historico. However, if you’re booking your own place, we highly recommend looking for accommodations in Polanco, Roma / Condesa or Reforma. These neighborhoods are trendy, safe, and close to everything!
Are there areas that I should avoid?
While most parts of the city are safe, it's best to avoid areas that are far from tourist zones, especially at night. Some areas like Iztapalapa, Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl, and parts of Tlalpan can be less safe due to higher crime rates. Stick to well-known neighborhoods like Polanco, Roma, Condesa, Reforma and Chapultepec, especially for first-time visitors.
Are there any cultural etiquette tips to keep in mind?
Greet people with respect: Mexicans are generally warm and friendly, so a polite greeting ("Hola" or "Buenos días") goes a long way.
Tipping: It’s customary to tip around 15% in restaurants, and even small tips for taxi drivers or bellhops are appreciated.
Personal space: Mexicans are generally more comfortable with close personal interactions, so don’t be surprised if people stand close to you when speaking.
What is the social and nightlife like in Mexico City?
One of the best things about Mexico City is how dining and nightlife go hand-in-hand. Meals here are social events, and lunch often turns into dinner as people relax, eat, drink, and enjoy each other’s company. Dinner usually starts late, and many restaurants transition into bars or clubs as the night goes on. The nightlife can even begin during lunch, with some places picking up in the afternoon and becoming lively spots as the evening unfolds. If you’re out for drinks, keep in mind that bars and clubs stay open late. Whether you're enjoying lunch, dinner or staying for the nightlife, you'll quickly see how seamlessly the evening extends. It’s one of the best parts of the city, and we definitely recommend diving into it!
